The Mdina Church (Cathedral): The cathedral was designed by the well-known Maltese architect, Lorenzo Gafa. By this time he had already designed several churches in Malta and was at the height of his career. The perfectly proportioned façade and the dynamic dome (by far his boldest and arguably the finest in Malta) make this the most impressive of all his churches. The work took just five years to complete and a number of houses were demolished at the same time to make way for a pjazza appropriate to the size and splendour of the church. The streets of Mdina: In Mdina there are two kinds of streets. The curved streets were built during the time of the Arabs as a form of defense. Going up these narrow curved streets, one cannot gauge how long they are or, who is waiting at the other end. The streets built during the time of the Order of St John in the 16th century are built straight. The Arabs also built bastions, but the bastions built by the Arabs differ from the bastions built during the time of the Order of St John. The bastions built during the time of the Arabs are built vertically, because at the time of the Arab rule people used to climb up the walls and they would be thrown down to their death, whereas when the Order of St John came to Malta, gunpowder started being used and so the bastions were built slightly at an angle, so that the cannon ball would ricochet back on the person who fired it. Dingli Cliffs are an impressive sight, especially if view them from sea level on an island cruise. They are the Island's natural fortress, one bastion the Knights did not have to build to protect themselves. From the cliff tops, one of the most striking views and sheerest drops is just west of Dingli village. Another atmospheric view is over to the uninhabited isle of Fifla. Dingli Cliffs seem to exude a mysterious charm especially late evening on calm summer days when the sunsets here can be dramatic. Following recent restoration works, this historic building is now used as a Government Guest Palace. Ta’ Qali Crafts Village: The former World War II military aerodrome was converted into a local hand-crafts centre. It's the ideal place to buy ceramics, jewellery and knitwear, pottery and see glass blowing and moulding as well as other craftspeople at work. Here one can buy something completely unique and original to take home. Within the craft centre one can find the Aviation Museum displaying aircrafts.

Gozo Citadel: The Citadel’s fine Baroque Cathedral is a masterpiece designed by Lorenzo Gafa’, the Maltese Architect who was responsible for the magnificent Cathedral of Mdina. The site on which it stands may well have been that of the Roman Temple of Juno, mentioned by Cicero in his writings. Its floor is made up of a mosaic of marble tombstones and ecclesiastical emblems, while its ceiling has a remarkable trompe l'oeil painting, depicting the interior of a dome that was never built. Island of Gozo: Gozo is known to provide a tranquil haven for a tempo and scene change. Ta’ Pinu: The Basilica of Ta’ Pinu is the most famous place of pilgrimage for the Maltese Islanders. Its origins go back to a day in June in 1883, when a woman heard the voice of the Virgin Mary in an old chapel. In the following years, many miracles and acts of grace were manifested at the site. Many believe that the prayers said in the chapel saved Gozo from the plague, which had stricken Malta at that time. The locals therefore decided to build a larger and more magnificent church on the site in honour of the Blessed Virgin. Funds were raised from Gozitans, including those living abroad and works on the new church began in 1920, with voluntary labour from the local community. In 1931, Ta’ Pinu was consecrated and a year later Pope Pius XI raised it to the status of Basilica. The original 16th century chapel was fully integrated into the new church.

The Azure Window is another spectacular natural landmark in Dwejra, along with The Inland Sea and Fungus Rock. The Blue Grotto is a natural rock formation which has been carved out of the rock by the relentless pounding of the sea. A number of caves can be reached by boat from Wied iz-Zurrieq. The biggest cave is the Blue Grotto. This cave is quite deep. The Blue Grotto Caves: The boats take the tourists to a number of caves carved into the cliff face. One of the caves visited is a small cave with a sandy bottom and usually people are given the opportunity to have a refreshing dip in the turquoise, emerald and blue waters of this cave. The Blue Grotto gets its name from the colour of the water close to the rock face. When exiting the Grotto you can see the deep blue Mediterranean in front of you and then the small island of Filfla appears straight ahead. Filfla is uninhabited except for a unique species of lizards that live there. When Malta was a British colony, the island of Filfla was used for target practice by the British Armed Forces. The island is now protected under Maltese law. The luzzu is the traditional fishing vessel used in Malta. It is pointed at both ends and is painted in characteristic bright colours. Before the introduction of modern registration the colour of the prow used to indicate the homeport of each particular boat. The average overall length is 6.7 meters and the hull material is wood. These vessels have been the mainstay of the fleet in times gone by and their average age is 37 years old. The luzzu are very colourful and painted on each side of the boat is the image of the Osiris eye,surviving from old Phoenicians traditions. Legend says that it protects the boat and the fishermen. The village of Marsaxlokk is the Islands' main fishing harbour; its Sunday fish market a fascinating insight into local life and a traditional industry. The stalls brim with the night's catch - fish of all shapes, colours and sizes.

The Three Cities: These small cities go by the names of Cospicua, Senglea and Vittoriosa. They are popularly known as the Three Cities, a term which was first used during the French occupation, when Napoleon decreed that Malta was to be divided into a number of administration units. Cospicua : Cospicua is the largest of the Three Cities on Grand Harbour opposite Valletta. It is known to many by its earlier name, Bormla. The city was renamed by the Knights of St John because of the brave (`conspicuous') role played by its people during the Great Siege of 1565. Most of Cospicua's shoreline is taken up by the older dockyard - an area now being restored, and developed as a marina. The city suffered extensive damage during World War II and although rebuilt, it has fewer inhabitants than in the pre-war years. Modern Cospicua is an important market centre in the heart of the docklands. The main building of cultural interest is the Collegiate Church of the Immaculate Conception, which is rich in exquisite works of art. The Firenzuola Fortifications, built in 1638, and Margherita Lines, part of the inland defences the Three Cities, are major landmarks. The Margherita Lines are in fact the only part of old Cospicua which survived World War II. Senglea: This small city, one of the so-called Three Cities , stands on a narrow promontory jutting into Grand Harbour. The land was fortified in 1551 by Grand Master Claude de la Sengle. The Maltese often use the area's earlier name, L-Isla, meaning the island or perhaps short for `peninsula'. During the Great Siege of 1565, Senglea was protected by Fort St Michael on its landward side and by Fort St Angelo on the tip of Vittoriosa across the creek. The heroic role played by its people led Grand Master Jean de la Valette to give the city the title of Citta' Invicta, the invincible city. Like its sister cities, Senglea suffered heavy damage during World War II. More than 75 percent of its buildings were destroyed. The parish church dedicated to the Nativity of the Madonna was rebuilt and retains its artistic heritage. The city is noted for its superb harbour views across to Valletta from Safe Haven Gardens at Senglea Point. The stone vedette, known as il-Gardjola, on the bastion-point served as a look-out post to guard the harbour entrance. The sculptured eye and ear above its windows are symbols of vigilance. Vittoriosa: Vittoriosa, or Birgu, one of the Three Cities, lies on one of the promontories jutting into Grand Harbour, opposite Valletta. At its tip is Fort St Angelo, perhaps the oldest fortification on the Islands. The strategic position of both fort and city over the millennia has led some to call this area `the cradle of Maltese history'. Certainly settlers and rulers from the Phoenicians to the British all made use of the defences here. To honour the part played by the city of Birgu, Grand Master La Valette renamed it Civitas Vittoriosa, `Victorious Town'. Vittoriosa was the first home of the Knights when they arrived in 1530. As such, it contains many important architectural riches. The Knights `auberges' (inns of residence), palaces and churches here are older than those in Valletta. Highlights include the Church of San Lawrenz, designed by Malta's most prominent baroque architect, Lorenzo Gafa', the Inquisitor's Palace, Fort St Angelo and the Maritime Museum.

The Buskett Gardens are located in a fertile valley located to the south of Rabat and just east of Dingli. The gardens are at their best in the Spring but they offer shade from the harsh mid-summer sun and offer a quite place for a walk in the Winter months. Verdala Palace is located on the edge of the Gardens. The gardens get their name from the Italian word Dingli Cliffs are an impressive sight, especially if view them from sea level on an island cruise. They are the Island's natural fortress, one bastion the Knights did not have to build to protect themselves. From the cliff tops, one of the most striking views and sheerest drops is just west of Dingli village. Another atmospheric view is over to the uninhabited isle of Fifla. Dingli Cliffs seem to exude a mysterious charm especially late evening on calm summer days when the sunsets here can be dramatic. Following recent restoration works, this historic building is now used as a Government Guest Palace. Siggiewi is situated on a plateau in the South Western part of Malta, a few kilometres away from Imdina, the ancient capital city of Malta, and 10 kilometres away from Valletta the capital city. The meaning of the word In the Maltese language 'ghar' means cave. Ghar Lapsi is a fishing hamlet on the southern coast. Access to the water is easy. Within a few strokes from the entry point is a shallow system of underwater caves lit up with beams of sunlight from the numerous exits. The Ghar Lapsi area is mostly in the 15 to 20 metres depth range and offers a large area of parallel reefs and depressions with most of the typical marine fauna of the Mediterranean. Mnajdra sits tucked in a hollow in the cliffs on Malta’s southern coast. The site is probably the most atmospheric of all of Malta’s temples, as it lies in an isolated position on a rugged stretch of coast overlooking the isle of Filfla. Mnajdra is a complex site consisting of three temples overlooking an oval forecourt. The first and oldest temple dates back to 3600-3200 BC, while the most impressive of the temples is the third, constructed between 3150-2500 BC. This temple is perhaps the finest surviving on the Islands. The masonry here shows intricate knowledge of building techniques and excellent workmanship. Blue Grotto is an unspoilt popular beauty spot and a geological curiosity consisting of a natural arch and a deep-sea cave formed in the rock face of the surrounding cliffs.

The stretch of the Victoria Lines (limits of Gharghur) gives clear views of Bahar ic-Caghaq, the Maghtab plain up to St. Paul's Bay and the north-eastern coast of Malta and Gozo as well as of the pre-second World War acoustic mirror (called il-Widna) immediately below. This is today the site of Maltacom's principal satellite communications installation as is evident from the large antennas. Verdala Fort and Barracks (1853). This fortress used to house the British Soldiers during their occupation of the Maltese Islands and shortly after it was converted into a number of governmental residential units. Senglea suffered heavy damage during World War II. More than 75 percent of its buildings were destroyed. The parish church dedicated to the Nativity of the Madonna was rebuilt and retains its artistic heritage. The city is noted for its superb harbour views across to Valletta from Safe Haven Gardens at Senglea Point. The stone vedette, known as il-Gardjola, on the bastion-point served as a look-out post to guard the harbour The first creek to port side on entering Grand Harbour is Rinella Creek which is dominated by the Fort Rinella and the giant 100-ton gun. It served it’s purpose to accommodate the British fleet and crew to disembark. Fort Rinella is one of a series of four coastal batteries built by the British in Malta and in Gibraltar between the years 1878 and 1886. The purpose for building these forts was for each of them to house an Armstrong 100-ton gun. The building of these forts was necessitated by Britain’s fear of loosing her naval superiority in the Mediterranean to Italy, who was at the time rebuilding her navy to an unprecedented strength.

This tower, also known as the Red Tower, was built in 1649 and was manned during both World Wars. It provides excellent all round views of Gozo, Comino and the Ghadira Nature Reserve. This Tower is situated on the crest of Marfa Ridge. A shallow alcove within the Tower housed a chapel dedicated to St Agatha. It is also known as the Red Tower due to the colour it was painted and this colour was retained on restoration. It was completed in 1649 during the rule of Grand Master Jean Paul Lascaris Castellar. Paradise Bay on the northern tip of Malta overlooks Cirkewwa where the ferry leaves for Gozo. Paradise Bay has a small, picturesque sandy beach with good facilities and some water sports options such as jet skiing. There is a car park on the cliff top. The beach is reached down numerous steep steps, but is worth the trek. The cliffs above the bay are perfect at sunset when you have spectacular skies and some hazy views over to Comino and Gozo. The countryside of this northern and isolated region of Malta is ideal for hiking. Ahrax point is the north-eastern point of Malta. There are a number of caves at the surface, inside of which there are several tunnels. The entry is a narrow inlet with depths from three to 10 metres. A 10 minute snorkel gets to the point where two options present themselves - to the left a reef rich in marine life and an impressive drop-off and to the right, an underwater entrance to a large cave. Throughout the dive there are plenty of cardinalfish, bright corals and red sponges. Ghadira, located in Mellieha Bay is the biggest stretch of sand on the Maltese islands. Although Malta and Gozo do not have the big beaches other countries have, its beaches are very picturesque and the water is as beautiful and as clear as any found in the Carribean.

Located in the north west of Malta, close to the village of Mellieha, the Selmun Palace( Hotel) offers a magnificent XVIII century castle on vast gardens planted with Mediterranean species (3 hectares). This green area overlooks the Mediterranean Sea, Saint Paul’s Bay and the islands of Gozo and Comino. Mistra Bay is a pebble beach between Xemxija Bay and Selmun. Mistra, like Xemxija, has a long history of sequent occupation that goes back to the Phoenicians and Roman rule. It has a number of caves in the area that were used as burial places. Others were used for refuge, shelter and to monitor the bay . A natural depression on one side of the bay now shelters different plant species. The military battery built by the knights, visible at the edge of the cliff, is now being used for Aquaculture. Fish farming pens are present at the outer part of the bay. These islands are at the western entrance to St Paul's Bay and the only way of reaching the islands is by boat. There are various dive sites at St Paul's Islands, including the location where St Paul was supposed to have been shipwrecked. Although there is nothing to show this, there are other remains such as some plates and ribs form an old destroyer and a small ferry sunk purposely in 1984. Another dive, is an open water reef dive. The seabed is covered in rocks and boulders, and small sea urchins and fireworms can be seen. Another dive is St Paul's valley, found between the two islands. The seabed is of white sand and is covered in boulders and Posidonia, where numerous wrasse can be found. Between the seagrass, broad-snouted pipefish can also be seen. Selmun is located in the North of Malta. It is a beautiful place, mainly countryside and bays.
